James T. Meeks starts mayoral campaign

"I plan on coming to neighborhoods on every Friday. I want to make sure people know where the mayor is," Meeks said at a campaign stop on what he's calling a "50 wards in 50 days" tour. "Why should everyone be forced to come to City Hall to conduct their city business?"

For more than a decade, the pastor of South Side mega-church Salem Baptist has said he has wanted to bring downtown-style commerce to all parts of the city — including national grocery chains to so-called food deserts.

"Chicago's communities should be the city's true core. We have to grow all of Chicago," Meeks said while meeting and greeting people at MacArthur's on the Far West Side. "Downtown is our centerpiece, we have to keep it as our crown jewel, but the neighborhoods are where people live."
